A school assignment in September 2000 pairs Wesley Ardoin, a ten-year-old in Opelousas, Louisiana, with Paweł Heczko, a ten-year-old in the mountains of southern Poland. The rest of the class gives up after a letter or two; these two keep writing for twenty-six years, through a move to England, a hurricane, an envelope returned unopened in 2015, and eleven years of silence. What they argue about, and never settle, is whether a church is the building or the people inside it. The novel consists entirely of the letters themselves, including the ones neither man sent.
