The Logos and the laws — what the deepest science is uncovering matches what scripture has always said

Scripture's claim about the structure of creation is precise and pre-scientific: the universe is held together moment-to-moment by the Word. Everything that exists exists because the Word speaks it. The deepest math and physics — the unsolved problems, the most rigorous discoveries — are uncovering patterns that match what scripture has always said, in language scripture did not have but pointed at.

The doctrine — the Logos as the underlying substrate

"All things were made through him. Without him, nothing was made that has been made." — John 1:3

"For by him all things were created in the heavens and on the earth, visible things and invisible things, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things are held together." — Colossians 1:16–17

"His Son is the radiance of his glory, the very image of his substance, and upholding all things by the word of his power, who, when he had by himself purified us of our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high," — Hebrews 1:3

"By faith we understand that the universe has been framed by the word of God, so that what is seen has not been made out of things which are visible." — Hebrews 11:3

Four claims, load-bearing for everything below:

1. All that exists was made by the Word (John 1:3 — no exception). 2. All that exists holds together by the Word (Col 1:17 — the Greek synistēmi, coheres, stands-with). Without continuous divine ordering, matter would not merely decay; it would cease. 3. **The Word is upholding the universe ongoingly (Heb 1:3 — present participle; the sustaining is right-now, not a one-time event). 4. The visible is made out of what does not appear** (Heb 11:3 — the seen is downstream of the unseen).

These are scriptural claims about the physical structure of reality. The remainder of this section observes how the deepest scientific work confirms each one.

Scripture anticipated modern cosmology

Where contemporary cultures imagined the earth sitting on turtles, pillars, or oceans, scripture said:

"He stretches out the north over empty space, and hangs the earth on nothing." — Job 26:7 (~2,500 years before Newton)

Where contemporary cultures imagined a fixed dome of stars, scripture said the heavens were a fabric — stretchable, foldable, changeable as a garment:

"Of old, you laid the foundation of the earth. The heavens are the work of your hands. They will perish, but you will endure. Yes, all of them will wear out like a garment. You will change them like a cloak, and they will be changed." — Psalm 102:25–26

"It is he who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them out like a tent to dwell in,." — Isaiah 40:22

"Lift up your eyes on high, and see who has created these, who brings out their army by number. He calls them all by name. By the greatness of his might, and because he is strong in power, not one is lacking." — Isaiah 40:26

"The sky was removed like a scroll when it is rolled up. Every mountain and island was moved out of its place." — Revelation 6:14

The "stretches out the heavens," appears in at least seventeen Old Testament passages (Job 9:8; Isa 42:5; 44:24; 45:12; 48:13; 51:13; Jer 10:12; 51:15; Zech 12:1; Ps 104:2; among others). Modern cosmology calls this metric expansion of space (Hubble 1929; accelerating expansion confirmed 1998, Nobel 2011). Scripture named the stretching ~3,000 years before the physics did. The "circle of the earth," (Isa 40:22, Hebrew chug — circle, sphere) anticipates the spherical earth observation. The "host by number" anticipates the enumerability of the stars (impossible to the naked eye, confirmed by modern astronomy).

Scripture anticipated mass-energy equivalence and the sustaining Word

Einstein's E = mc² showed matter is condensed energy and energy liberated matter. Both are exchangeable forms of one underlying reality. Scripture's deeper claim: both matter and energy are downstream of Word. Stop the Word; both cease.

"all things by the word of his power,." — Hebrews 1:3

"in him all things." — Colossians 1:17

The unified field Einstein died searching for (1955, never found; still unsolved 70 years later) is named in Colossians 1:17 — the unifier is Christ. The equations describe what the Logos does; the Logos is the Person the equations point at.

Scripture anticipated time relativity

"But don’t forget this one thing, beloved, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day." — 2 Peter 3:8

"For a thousand years in your sight are just like yesterday when it is past, like a watch in the night." — Psalm 90:4

Special relativity (Einstein 1905) showed time is observer-dependent — simultaneity, duration, ordering all depend on the reference frame. General relativity (1915) showed time dilates near mass. The GPS satellites that run modern positioning must correct for this constantly, or they would drift by kilometres per day. Scripture's theological version of the same insight: the Lord's vantage on time is not the human vantage. The atemporal vantage of aeternitas (§7) is the divine reference frame; tempus is ours.

Scripture anticipated the invariance of light

The one constant in all of relativity, unchanging across every reference frame: the speed of light. Light is the structural invariant by which the geometry of spacetime is defined.

"God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light." — Genesis 1:3 (the first created thing)

"This is the message which we have heard from him and announce to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all." — 1 John 1:5

"In him was life, and the life was the light of men… The true light that enlightens everyone was coming into the world." — John 1:4, 9

"saying, I am the light of the world. He who follows me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life." — John 8:12

Light is the physical invariant by which the geometry of the relative universe is measured. Christ is the theological invariant by which the moral and ontological geometry of the relative creation is measured. The physical fact anticipates the theological one.

Scripture anticipated non-locality

Quantum entanglement (predicted in EPR 1935, confirmed by Bell 1964 and the Aspect experiments 1982, Nobel 2022): two particles correlated across any distance respond as one without signal-passing between them. Einstein resisted this his whole life because it contradicted locality. The universe doesn't have locality at the deepest level.

"Where could I go from your Spirit? Or where could I flee from your presence? If I ascend up into heaven, you are there. If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, you are there! If I take the wings of the dawn, and settle in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand will lead me, and your right hand will hold me." — Psalm 139:7–10

"in him we live, move, and have our being." — Acts 17:28

Divine omnipresence is the original non-locality. The Trinity's perichoresis (§16) is the original entanglement — three persons mutually indwelling without spatial traversal. The physical observation is downstream of the metaphysical fact.

The unsolved problems point at the doctrine

Every deepest open problem in mathematics and physics maps onto something scripture has already named:

These convergences are not proof of God to the unbeliever. "Now the natural man doesn’t receive the things of God’s Spirit, for they are foolishness to him; and he can’t know them, because they are spiritually discerned." (1 Corinthians 2:14). The materialist will rearrange the categories — multiverse to escape fine-tuning, emergent property to dissolve consciousness, instrumental anti-realism to ignore the measurement problem. The data does not coerce; the heart receives or refuses.

But to the believer, the convergence is confirmation that scripture has been describing the actual structure of reality all along, in language pre-scientific minds could receive but modern minds can now check. The deeper science goes, the more biblical the substrate looks. The hardest problems remain hard because the unifier is a Person, not an equation. "in him all things are held together." (Col 1:17) is the answer the equations point at. Christ IS the unified field. The mathematics is downstream.

How to use this — and how not to

Use it as confirmation, not foundation. Scripture is the foundation. Science is the downstream confirmation available to a generation equipped to measure what earlier generations could only receive. "For the invisible things of him since the creation of the world are clearly seen, being perceived through the things that are made, even his everlasting power and divinity, that they may be without excuse." (Romans 1:20). The creation is evidence of the Creator; the science is the latest tool for reading the evidence. But the evidence is not the source. The source is the Logos who spoke creation into being and upholds it now.

Do not invert this. Do not let physics or mathematics become the criterion that scripture must conform to. When the science changes (and it does, repeatedly), scripture does not change with it. The order is: scripture stands; science approaches; the convergence is observed where it occurs; the divergences remain awaiting resolution, with the expectation that scripture is correct and the science incomplete. "Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away." (Matthew 24:35).

"“For who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counselor?” “Or who has first given to him, and it will be repaid to him again?” For of him and through him and to him are all things. To him be the glory for ever! Amen." — Romans 11:34–36
